Department of Physics & Electronics
Since inception in the year 1984, the department has constantly and
significantly contributed towards teaching and research as a result of this
concerted effort, the State Government has accorded the status of ‘Center for
Excellence’ to the department in 2010 with a grant of Rs. 1.53 crores.
The department presently offers M.Sc. Physics and M.Sc. Electronics courses with
intake of 30 and 20 students respectively. Recognizing its research potential,
UGC has identified and financially supported the department as nodal center for
providing computer facilities to the university departments. Department has
organized seminars (1989, 1999 and 2003) and workshop (1994) of National level.
More than a dozen research projects have been sanctioned to the teachers of the
department by various funding agencies. Latest among them is a DST sponsored
major research project of Rs. 14 lakhs and UPCST sponsored project of Rs. 6
lakhs has been sanctioned to Dr. S.R. Vishwakarma. Around 46 Ph.D.s have been
produced by the department till date. More than 230 research papers in reputed
International and National journals have been published by the teachers and
research scholars of the department. Students of this department are absorbed in
multinational and national organizations and institutions of repute in India and
abroad like IBM, TechMahindra, Tata Infotech., HCL etc. About 22 students have
qualified NET, JRF and JEST examinations.
The department is well equipped with internet and LAN facilities. Electronics,
communication and Computer Laboratories are enriched with latest equipment’s and
research facilities. Availability of hi-tech seminar room and teaching through
modern aids like LCD projectors and Computer aided programs are the regular
features of the department. The department is going to establish VLSI and
Material Science laboratories for specialized teaching and research in the year
Department of Mathematics & Statistics
The Department established in 1984 offers postgraduate program in Mathematics with specialization in statistics. The department offers knowledge based education to students and seeks to develop problem solving skills within the domain of mathematical spectrum. Recently the department is concentrating to take up contemporary issues including inter-group and trans-disciplinary subjects for teaching, learning and research to cope up with interfacing thrust areas of mathematical sciences at turning and cross roads of knowledge frontiers in its programs of M.Sc. and Ph.D..
Faculty members are internationally traveled and have esoteric exposure to their respective knowledge fields. Having produced around 50 Ph.D.s the faculty members have published 200 research papers, 50 of them in international journals of high impact factor. About 20 students of the department have qualified JRF/NET/GATE examinations.
Almost all the faculty members have received fellowship and presented papers in International seminars. In last three years, Dr. Lal Sahab Singh visited USA, Greek and Italy, Dr. C.K. Mishra, Head of Department visited China, Germany and Hungary while Dr. S.S. Mishra visited Ethiopia, Switzerland, Romania and USA for their substantial paper presentation.
National conferences, Mathematical Olympiad and Lecture Series are the regular features of the department. This year the department has organized a national seminar sponsored by Department of Higher Education, Govt. of UP. Prof. Satish Kumar Tripathi, B.U. University, USA and Prof. Kamal Nayan Agarwal, Howard University, USA delivered lectures in the department. The department is also associated with National Board of Higher Mathematics; Government of India.
Department of Biochemistry
Since inception in 1993, the department has been making sustained efforts to produce students of International standard. Most of the students passing out from this department have been absorbed / engaged in regular services and / or research activities in various reputed institutions like ICGEB, NII, CDRI, IITR, DRDO and JNU. One of our students got faculty position in University of Bern, Switzerland. The department is also engaged in research activities in popular bio-chemical disciplines like Protein-chemistry and Enzymology, Environmental-biochemistry, Clinical-biochemistry. Recognizing its research potential, central agencies like UGC, CSIR, DST, UPCST, UPCAR and AICTE have sanctioned twelve research projects to the department since inception. A few to mention are Rs 83 lakhs by DST in 2004-05, Rs 13 lakhs by U.G.C. in 2004. The department offers M.Sc. programs in Biochemistry and Biotechnology with an annual intake of 25 students in each branch respectively. The department is equipped with some rare instruments like Spectro-polarimeter, Spectro-photometer, Spectro-flourimeter, Micro-centrifuge etc. To activate the research activities in two major fields namely, ‘The various aspects of Environment and Clinical-biochemistry’ and ‘Protein-chemistry and Molecular-enzymology’. The faculty members have published several research articles in reputed National and International Journals. The department organized five national seminars till now and organizes series of special lectures on various topics on regular basis. Prof. R.L. Singh has been awarded ‘IUTOX Senior Fellowship Award’ by International Union of Toxicology at Montreal, Canada during XI International Congress of Toxicology (2007).
Department of Microbiology
The department, established in 1993, offers postgraduate and doctoral degrees with an objective to generate competent man power in the diverse field of Microbiology. The department is well equipped with the basic and latest facilities yielding competent students who are pursuing research at various institutions of India and International repute including NBRI, CIMAP, KGMU, IIT, JNU, IISC, Bangalore and institutes in USA, UK, Canada and also contributing to usher quality improvement in companies they have joined.
The department has been accorded the status of Center of Excellence by State Government in the year 2008 and received a grant of Rs. 1.00 crore. A sum of Rs. 30 lakhs has been granted by DST-FIST and Rs. 10 lakhs under UGC Non-SAP scheme in 2009. At present, about six research projects are running in the department and more than a dozen projects have been completed by the department.
Besides students, faculty members are also engaged in furtherance of research in the field of Industrial and Environmental Microbiology. Projects from different research funding agencies like AICTE, DST, UPCST, CSIR etc. have been awarded to the department. Dr. Tuhina Verma recently won the Best Research Paper Award at National Symposium organized by Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Lucknow and Prof. S. K. Garg has been honoured by ‘Acharya Narendra Deo Samman 2002’ conferred by ‘Seva samiti’ for out standing contribution in the field of teaching and research. Two research scholars of the department Ranjan Singh and Neha Singh were honoured by Young Scientist Award and Best Paper Presentation Award in National and International Conferences respectively in 2010.
The department with its complete vigour is attempting to inculcate an atmosphere for advanced microbial technology improvement and is actively engaged in training the local people of region about possible uses and benefits of microorganisms.
Department of Environmental Sciences
It is the first full-fledged department of Environmental Sciences amongst the State universities of Uttar Pradesh, established in 1994. The department is actively involved in conducting research in Environmental pollution and management, Management of waste water and industrial solid waste, Toxin producing algal species besides imparting teaching at postgraduate level.
More than 250 research papers have been published till date in International and National Journals of repute. Seven major research projects have been completed and six research projects are under progress in the department funded by different national agencies.
Prof. G.C. Pandey has received ‘Prof. J.S. Datta Munshi Gold Medal’ by international society for ecological communication in an International Conference in 2009. He has been honoured with ‘Rastriya Gaurav Award’ by India International Friendship Society in 2010, ‘Vigyan Ratan Award’ on 29th March 2010 by CST, Govt. of UP. Prof. Pandey was also conferred upon ‘Shikshak Shree Samman’ by Department of Higher Education, Government of Uttar Pradesh on 5th September 2010, the teachers’ day for his outstanding contribution in teaching and research.
Two research scholars of the department R.P. Singh and Sangh Deep Gautam participated in ‘Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica in 2008 and 2009. Dr. Jaswant Singh of the department also participated in 22nd and 24th Indian Scientific Expedition to Antarctica.
