The department, established in 1993, offers postgraduate and doctoral degrees with an objective to generate competent man power in the diverse field of Microbiology. The department is well equipped with the basic and latest facilities yielding competent students who are pursuing research at various institutions of India and International repute including NBRI, CIMAP, KGMU, IIT, JNU, IISC, Bangalore and institutes in USA, UK, Canada and also contributing to usher quality improvement in companies they have joined.
The department has been accorded the status of Center of Excellence by State Government in the year 2008 and received a grant of Rs. 1.00 crore. A sum of Rs. 30 lakhs has been granted by DST-FIST and Rs. 10 lakhs under UGC Non-SAP scheme in 2009. At present, about six research projects are running in the department and more than a dozen projects have been completed by the department.
Besides students, faculty members are also engaged in furtherance of research in the field of Industrial and Environmental Microbiology. Projects from different research funding agencies like AICTE, DST, UPCST, CSIR etc. have been awarded to the department. Dr. Tuhina Verma recently won the Best Research Paper Award at National Symposium organized by Baba Saheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Lucknow and Prof. S. K. Garg has been honoured by ‘Acharya Narendra Deo Samman 2002’ conferred by ‘Seva samiti’ for out standing contribution in the field of teaching and research. Two research scholars of the department Ranjan Singh and Neha Singh were honoured by Young Scientist Award and Best Paper Presentation Award in National and International Conferences respectively in 2010.
The department with its complete vigour is attempting to inculcate an atmosphere for advanced microbial technology improvement and is actively engaged in training the local people of region about possible uses and benefits of microorganisms.
