The Department of Yoga Therapy came into existence in the year 2005 after the University Grant Commission (UGC), New Delhi sanctioned two years P.G. Diploma in Yoga Therapy aiming to cater to the needs of all over development of human being including physical, mental, social and spiritual health of the society. Prof. N.K.Tiwari, Department of History, Archaeology and Culture was first coordinator of the department who submitted the proposal to the UGC and established the department from very beginning. The course was, however, interrupted during 2011-2016 due to some inevitable reasons.
The course has been revived soon after new Vice-Chancellor Prof. Manoj Dixit has assumed his office in the month of May, 2017. He appointed Dr S. S. Mishra, Professor, Department Mathematics and Statistics as new coordinator of the department. Moreover, the Hon’ble Vice-Chancellor had also been pleased to appoint three new faculty members to run the classes of the department as well as to bring about positive aroma and ambience of teaching and learning in the department.
So far, the department has organized two national level seminars and three lectures and produced about 175 post graduate students who passed out from the department. The department has also organized international yoga day in collaboration with the faculty of student’s welfare which spanned over three days of June 19 – 21, 2017. On June 21, 2017 the programme was finally culminated into a form of seminar so as to provide effective platform in order to communicate with and to deliberate fruitfully the related issues of yoga and health amongst larger audience of the society.
The department has also successfully organized the Vishwa Bandhutwa Diwas on Sept 14, 2017 in collaboration with Kanya Kumari Kendra Shakha Faizabad on the occasion of first unique speech of Swami Vivekanada delivered in World Parliament Religion at Chicago on Sept 11, 1893. The main purpose of observing this day was to disseminate the global message of peace, harmony and brotherhood. The chief Speaker was Jeevanvrati Sushri Radha Didi, Vivekanad Kendra Kanya Kumari. During Convocation Week, a thought provoking lecture was delivered by Prof S Mishra, ITS, Lucknow University Lucknow on “Impact of Yoga on Human Health” on 25 October, 2017.
Swami Vivekanand Jayanti was celebrated by the department with full fervour and enthusiasm on January 12, 2018. In this programme, Acharya Maithili Nandan Sharan was chief Guest and speaker on the day. Dr Santoshi, a homoeopathist delivered her lecture on “women’s menstrual problems and solutions at the Department of Yoga Therapy. ‘Cleansing process by shatkakarma and sampurna snehana’ Two days workshop was conducted under the supervision of Dr. Aradhana, Mr. Anurag Soni, Ms. Gayatri Verma, Mr. alok Tiwari. Swami Vivekanad Jayanti was celebrated on January 12, 2018. One day seminar organised successfully in the seminar main speaker was Dr Gurudev, Faculty of Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga New Delhi, 2018. Plantation drive was launched by the department during start the session in the month of July, 2019.
A national seminar was organized on by the department of Yoga Therapy on the focal theme entitled as “Recent Advances in Yoga and Naturopathy” in association with International Naturopathy Organization New Delhi during 29-30 March, 2019 in which about 500 participants participated from all over India and about 25 invited lectures and 30 research papers ware presented by the researchers and participants. A special session was organized for critical health issues of women and children during the conference. Faculty and Students of the departments have bagged several awards and distinction by creating their small niche in their area of interest and employed as yoga expert in various wellness centres of UP Govt. including owning their own yoga-wellness studios.
International day of Yoga and International e conferences were organized in between 20-22 June, 2020 and 20-22 June, 2021 respectively in which about 200 participants took parts and 10 speakers including renowned speakers from abroad have delivered their inspiring talks.
