The department was established in 1984 with initial nomenclature of Department of Solid State
Physics (Electronics). It started M.Sc.-Solid State Physics (Electronics) course with an intake of 10
students. In 1994, UGC gave a positive nod to run M.Sc.-Electronics and B.Sc.-Electronics courses in
the department. The department was renamed as 'Department of Physics and Electronics'.
At present, the department offers M.Sc.-Physics (Electronics) and M.Sc.-Electronics courses
with intake of 30 and 30 students, each. The department is continuously contributing in research domain
of Material Sciences (Polymer nanocomposite, gas sensor, humidity sensor and solar thin films, Liquid
crystal) and Design and Simulation Studies (Electronic Circuits, Antenna, Biomedical and
Optoelectronics). Recognizing its research potential, the State Government has accorded the status of
'Center of Excellence' to the Department (in the field of Material Sciences) in 2010. High-tech research
equipments like Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM) and X-ray Diffractometer (XRD) and UVSpectrophotometer,
installed under Center of Excellence scheme. The department is also equipped
with Wi-Fi facility. Four Smart Class rooms withall necessary facilities are available in the department.
Availability of recent software like Cadence, OPTISIM, VIVADO, Labview, MATLAB and Hyperlinx
(IE3D) in the department has boosted the research activity and they are being used by PG and Research
scholars and faculty members of the department.
The department's involvement in research has improved the academic ambience of the University.
During the last five years research efforts of the faculty members culminated in the form of more than
150 research papers, published in indexed National / International Journals like Indian Journal of Pure
and Applied Physics, National Academy Science Letters, American Journal of Physics, American
Journal of Material Science & Applications etc. Several faculty members of the department have attended
various international/national workshops and conferences within country and abroad. Till date the
department has produced 70 PhDs and faculty members of the department have completed 9 projects
sanctioned by various funding agencies like UGC, AICTE, DST and UPCST.
Alumni of the department are gracing various multinational and national organizations and
institutions of repute in India and abroad like IBM, TecMahindra, Tata Infotech., HCL, BSNL etc. Several
students have qualified NET, JRF, JEST and GATE examinations in past. This year two final year
students have qualified UGC-NET in Electronic Science.Students of the department have won many
prizes in extracurricular activities.
Many eminent professors, scientists and academicians have delivered invited lectures to the
faculty and students of the department in last five years. Apart from conventional methods, the faculties
of department make use of ICT assisted modern teaching aid for classroom teaching. Tutorials, Seminars,
Projects and continuous interaction programs with students are the regular features of the Department.
The Department has organized three International Conferences and ten National conferences/workshop/
seminars in last three years.
